We have long considered 6'3 class of 2010 wing forward Rayvonte Rice from Champaign Centennial High School in Champaign, IL to be an ideal mid-major recruit. It is therefore no surprise that after helping lead his high school team to the class 3A state championship this past March as well as enjoying an outstanding spring on the traveling team circuit with the Rising Stars 17-under team, Rice has attracted endless recruiting attention from a slew of mid-major programs.
According to his coach and Rising Stars CEO Mike Weinstein, the latest schools to come forward with scholarship offers to Rice are St. Louis and Nevada. This is in addition to a long line of previous offers from other schools including Oregon State, Western Michigan, Illinois State, Loyola-Chicago, Southern Illinois, Ohio University, Drake, Eastern Illinois, Kent State and Detroit.
While Rice may be a bit undersized for his position, he more than compensates for that with his strength and athleticism. He is one of the best finishers in the state for his size, gets to the rack with relative ease, is a strong rebounder and has a solid mid-range game. Should he continue to improve his ball handling and shooting range, you are undoubtedly talking about a player who could move from a mid-major to high major level recruit.
Rice will compete during the July evaluation period with the Rising Stars Gold squad at events which will include the Chicago Classic in Deerfield, IL; the NY2LA Sports Summer Jam in Milwaukee and both the 17-under Super Showcase and 17-under National AAU Tournament in Orlando.
