Over the past few months everyone has seen the ascension of 6'10 center Anthony Davis from Perspective Charter in Chicago to the point where he is now hands down the #1 player in Illinois from the class of 2011, a top five player nationally and one of the most amazing success stories in recent memory when it comes to Illinois high school basketball.  Greg Mays, a 6'8 class of 2011 post prospect from Crete-Monee High School in Monee, Il is not in the same category with Davis, but is rapidly making his mark as one of the true sleepers to emerge in Illinois and is a player that is certainly worth talking about.

Mays has looked impressive throughout the entire spring and summer thus far and has performed quite well while playing for his Illinois Wolverines traveling team at the King James Summer Showcase in Waukegan, IL, which concludes today.  He is an athletic big man who gets up and down the floor well and finishes with authority.  Not only that, but Mays is also strong on the glass, has the mobility to block and alter shots both around the basket and on the perimeter, and has shown the ability to face up and knock down the open jumper out to 15'.

In addition to competing on the traveling team circuit, Mays has also starred for Crete-Monee at team camps at both Indiana University and DePaul University.  He will continue performing for the Wolverines throughout the July evaluation period, including at the upcoming NY2LA Sports Summer Jam in Mequon, WI as well as the 17-Under National AAU Tournament in Orlando.

After watching Mays at the DePaul University Team Camp, we initially saw him as a low major D1 prospect.  Now that we have had an opportunity to watch him further, we now firmly believe that he is an ideal mid-major recruit with the potential to possibly climb even higher before it is all over.  As a result, we would not be surprised to see recruiting interest in Mays soar by the time the July evaluation period comes to an end.
