Class Of 2014 Player Watch: Tyquone Greer

We have a confession to make. After watching 6'5 2014 wing Tyquone Greer from Orr High School in Chicago during the July evaluation period this past summer, we thought that he was no better than the fourth best player on the loaded Meanstreets-Wilburn traveling team. When one considers that the squad features three other D1 prospects in 6'3 2014 2-guard Drake Harris from Grand Rapids Christian in Grand Rapids,MI; 6'6 2014 power forward Tyler Wideman from Lake Central High School in Saint John, IN and 5'8 2014 point guard Tyler Ulis from Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, IL that is not an insult.
Coming into the Illinois high school basketball season, Greer had begun to receive considerable hype but we were looking for the substance to go along with it. Since the season started, Greer has certainly shown that he sports a game which is worthy of the accolades being thrown his way. As a result, he has caught the attention of numerous college recruiters and scouting analysts, including Illinois Prep Bulls-eye.
Greer's strong play began with an impressive performance in a 45-29 thrashing of highly regarded Whitney Young, which came in front of a huge contingent of D1 coaches. He followed that up with a solid outing versus East Chicago Central when we watched him this past weekend at the Bob Hambric Memorial Shootout at T.F. North High School in Calumet City, IL. In that contest Greer did not even start, but turned it on in the second half and was especially dominant in the fourth quarter as Orr coasted to a 70-42 victory.
To begin with, Greer is as athletic as any player that we have seen in Illinois from the 2014 class. He runs the floor like a deer and finishes in spectacular fashion. However, the skill set does not end there. Greer can also put the ball on the floor and has also demonstrated 3-point range. With that being said, he can play multiple positions on the floor and looks to project as an ideal 2 or 3 at the college level.
From a recruiting standpoint, a number of high major programs have already taken notice of Greer's game. He currently has a scholarship offer in the fold courtesy of Providence and is also drawing interest from the likes of Illinois, DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette and Michigan State among others.
At the present time Greer tends to play in spurts. He needs to work on becoming more consistent from start to finish and maintaining the same level of intensity. We aren't sure that he is quite as good as a few others are making him out to be right now, but make no mistake about it--Greer sports considerable up side and will undoubtedly rank with most all of the top prospects from the extremely talented 2014 class in Illinois when it is said and done.
